Each day carries a different emphasis, and flowers do different work across them.

The DMV has a substantial South Asian community across Fairfax, Loudoun, Montgomery and Howard counties, and Diwali here is a genuine logistical event — homes decorated, extended families hosted, offices marking it, and a real demand for marigolds that the American floral supply chain is not naturally set up to meet.

The Flower That Matters Most

Marigold — genda phool — is the flower of Diwali, and no substitution reads the same. Its saffron and orange tones are considered auspicious, it holds up in heat and handling far better than almost anything else, and it is used structurally rather than decoratively.

Two structural uses dominate. Torans are the garlands strung across doorways, traditionally marigold with mango leaves, marking the threshold as a welcome to Lakshmi. Rangoli — the floor patterns laid at entrances — frequently use loose marigold petals alongside coloured powder and rice.

Marigold is not decoration at Diwali. It marks a threshold, and a doorway without one reads as a house that has not prepared.

Lotus carries its own significance as the flower associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, and appears on home altars during the puja. Jasmine and roses feature throughout, particularly in garlands and in offerings.

The Colour Rule

Diwali is a festival of abundance and light, and the palette follows directly: saffron, marigold orange, deep gold, crimson, magenta, and rich pinks. These are the tones that read as celebration.

Avoid white and predominantly white arrangements. In much of Hindu tradition white carries associations with mourning and is used at funerals, so a white bouquet sent for Diwali lands very differently than intended. This is a close mirror of the yellow-flower convention in Slavic cultures — a colour that is neutral or elegant in American gifting and specifically wrong in the receiving culture.

For sending, warm and saturated is the reliable direction. The Classic Red reads unambiguously as celebration, and Pride in Bloom works well where you want the brightness and range that suits the festival.

Florist's tip: If you want marigold torans or loose petals for rangoli, order at least a week out and say what they are for. Marigold in the volumes Diwali requires is not a standing item in most DMV coolers, and it needs to be brought in deliberately rather than pulled from stock.

What Happens on Which Day

Dhanteras (Nov 6) — the auspicious buying day, traditionally for gold, silver and new utensils. Homes begin decorating; this is when torans typically go up.
Choti Diwali (Nov 7) — smaller observance, diyas lit, preparation continues.
Lakshmi Puja (Nov 8) — the main night. Home altars are dressed with fresh flowers, diyas throughout the house, family gathering and the largest meal.
Govardhan Puja / Annakut (Nov 9) — a food-centred day, often marked at temples.
Bhai Dooj (Nov 10) — brothers and sisters; gifts exchanged, and a natural day for sending flowers to a sibling.

For gifting purposes, the two dates that matter are Dhanteras — because it is culturally the day for buying and receiving — and the day before Lakshmi Puja, so that flowers are in the house for the main evening.

Sending to a Diwali Household

If you are invited to a Diwali gathering, flowers are welcome, with the same caveat that applies to any hosting holiday: send ahead rather than carrying them. The host on Lakshmi Puja night is cooking for a large group and lighting an entire house; handing them cut stems at the door creates a task.

Sweets are the traditional gift and flowers complement rather than replace them. A warm-toned arrangement delivered on Dhanteras or the morning of November 7 is close to ideal — it arrives while the house is being dressed rather than mid-celebration.
