The Flowers of Diwali: Marigold, Lotus and What Each One Means
Most festival flowers are chosen for how they look.
Most festival flowers are chosen for how they look. The flowers of Diwali were chosen for what they do — mark a threshold, carry an offering, survive a week of heat and handling — and the aesthetics followed. Understanding that order makes it much easier to send something that reads correctly.
Marigold: The Structural Flower
Marigold — genda phool in Hindi — is not one flower among several at Diwali. It is the material the festival is built from.
Its saffron and orange tones are considered auspicious, associated with the sun, with prosperity, and with the colours of Hindu devotional life. But its dominance is also intensely practical: marigold is remarkably durable. It holds its form off water for a day or more, tolerates being strung, handled, walked past and brushed against, and does not wilt in the way a rose or a jasmine will. For a flower that has to hang in a doorway for five days, nothing else comes close.
It appears in two structural forms. Torans are the garlands strung across the top of a doorway, traditionally marigold interwoven with mango leaves, marking the entrance as prepared and welcoming. Rangoli — the patterns laid on the floor at entrances — often uses loose marigold petals alongside coloured powders and rice.
Marigold dominates Diwali partly because it is auspicious and partly because it is the only flower tough enough to hang in a doorway for five days.
Lotus: Lakshmi's Flower
The lotus carries the densest symbolism of any flower in the festival. It is the flower of Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity and the deity at the centre of Diwali's main night, and she is almost always depicted seated on one.
Its meaning comes from how it grows — rooted in mud, rising through water, opening clean above the surface. Purity emerging from difficulty, and prosperity that is spiritual rather than merely material. On Lakshmi Puja night, lotus on the home altar is the most direct floral offering available.
Fresh lotus is genuinely hard to source in the DMV in November, and this is one case where an honest substitution is better than a poor original. Open, layered blooms in pink and cream carry the visual reference without pretending to be what they are not — Peony and Ranunculus is the piece we most often build when a household wants that shape on the altar.
Jasmine and Rose
Jasmine — mogra — is the evening flower. It opens and releases scent after dark, which is precisely when Diwali happens, and it is strung into garlands worn in the hair and draped on altars. Its association is with purity and with devotion.
Roses are used throughout, in garlands, in offerings, and scattered as petals. Red and deep pink carry the celebratory weight — The Classic Red sits squarely in the register the festival wants. Roses are more versatile than marigold and considerably less durable, so they belong on the altar and the table rather than in a doorway.
Florist's tip: Mango leaves are as important as the flowers in a traditional toran, and they are the part most often omitted by florists unfamiliar with the form. If you want a toran that reads correctly, ask for mango or banana leaf worked in — not just a marigold rope.
Why White Is the One to Avoid
In much of Hindu tradition, white is the colour of mourning. It is worn at funerals and associated with death and renunciation rather than celebration.
This inverts the usual American instinct, where white flowers are the safe, elegant, never-wrong choice. For Diwali specifically — a festival of light, abundance and prosperity — a predominantly white arrangement is the clearest available misstep, and it is one that a well-meaning sender makes precisely by choosing what would be tasteful in any other context.
The correct direction is saturated and warm: saffron, orange, gold, crimson, magenta, deep pink. If you want restraint, choose warm blush and gold rather than white and cream.
Reading a Household
Diwali is celebrated across Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities, with different emphases and different regional traditions within each. A Gujarati household and a Bengali household mark it differently, and a second-generation family in Loudoun County may observe it quite differently again.
The reliable constants are the palette and the marigold. Beyond that, asking is better than assuming — and for most households, a warm, generous arrangement delivered on Dhanteras is right regardless of regional tradition. Common Questions
Why is marigold used for Diwali?
Its saffron and orange tones are considered auspicious and associated with prosperity, and it is exceptionally durable — it holds its form off water for a day or more, which is what allows it to hang in a doorway garland for the full five days.
What is a toran?
A garland strung across the top of a doorway, traditionally marigold interwoven with mango leaves, marking the entrance as prepared and welcoming for the festival. The mango or banana leaf is as traditional as the flowers themselves.
What does the lotus symbolise at Diwali?
It is the flower of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity at the centre of Diwali's main night. Its meaning comes from growing rooted in mud and opening clean above the water — purity emerging from difficulty.
Why should white flowers be avoided for Diwali?
In much of Hindu tradition white is the colour of mourning, worn at funerals and associated with death rather than celebration. Saffron, orange, gold, crimson and magenta are the festival palette.
Tell us the household and what you are marking. We will build warm, and we will get the mango leaf into the toran.

Where Your Flowers Actually Come From
A dozen roses bought in Washington on a Tuesday in November were, with high probability, cut in the Andes the previous Thursday, trucked to Quito or Bogotá, flown overnight to Miami, cleared through customs and agricultural inspection, trucked up the eastern seaboard, and sold to a florist on Monday
