The two are constantly confused, including by people who should know better, and the difference matters when you are sending flowers.

Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, honours those who died in service. It is a day of mourning. Veterans Day, 11 November, honours everyone who has served, living and dead — and the overwhelming majority of the people it honours are alive. Wishing a living veteran a happy Memorial Day is a well-known misstep. The flowers follow the same logic: Memorial Day is a remembrance gesture, Veterans Day is a thank-you.
In this region both are unusually significant, because Washington has one of the highest concentrations of serving members, veterans, military families and Gold Star families in the country.
Arlington sets its own floral policy and enforces it, so it is worth getting right before making the drive. As policies are revised periodically, confirm the current version with the cemetery before a first visit — but the long-standing framework is:
Around Memorial Day weekend specifically, Arlington is at its busiest of the year, and the Flags In tradition — soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment placing a small flag before every headstone, more than a quarter of a million of them, in a single afternoon before the holiday — means the grounds are already fully dressed. Flowers on top of that are for the individual grave you have come to visit, not for the scene.
Other cemeteries in the region — Congressional, Quantico National, Rock Creek — set their own rules, and national cemeteries under the VA follow a broadly similar framework. Check before you go.
Simple, weather-durable, and not enormous. An outdoor arrangement in late May in Washington is sitting in direct sun and eighty-degree heat, and anything soft will be gone in hours.
Red, white and blue is traditional and entirely appropriate. So is white alone. So is a single flower — there is nothing inadequate about one stem, and for many families it is what they have always done.
Our Grave Tribute Arrangement is built for exactly this — no glass, weather-tolerant material, sized for a headstone base. Liberty Luxe Vase Arrangement 🇺🇸 and American Celebration Bouquet carry the patriotic palette for indoor and ceremonial settings.
The red poppy is the international remembrance flower, from the Flanders battlefields of the First World War and John McCrae's poem. In the US it is most closely associated with the American Legion's Memorial Day poppy distribution and with the VFW's Buddy Poppy programme, in which the paper flowers are assembled by veterans and the proceeds support veterans' welfare.
Two useful notes. First, in the US the poppy is a Memorial Day emblem more than a Veterans Day one — the reverse of British practice, where poppies are worn for Remembrance Day on 11 November. Second, real red poppies are essentially unavailable as a cut flower, since corn poppies do not survive cutting. Anyone offering fresh poppies is offering Icelandic poppies, which are a different species and a spring crop. If the poppy specifically matters, the paper Buddy Poppy is the authentic object, and it costs a donation.
This is where most people default to nothing, because there is no established convention. There should be one.
Flowers to a living veteran on 11 November work well when they are framed as a thank-you rather than a memorial. Avoid the funerary register entirely — no white-only sympathy arrangements, nothing that resembles a standing spray. Warm, generous, unambiguous.
Worth considering:
Both holidays produce delivery-day congestion around Arlington, the Mall, the memorials and the Pentagon, with road closures on Memorial Day weekend for the parade and for Rolling to Remember. Order two or three days ahead for any address in Arlington, Crystal City, Pentagon City or south Capitol Hill on those weekends.
Deliveries to military installations — Fort Myer, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Fort Belvoir — require base access and generally cannot be completed by a commercial courier without arrangement. The practical route is delivery to a residential or off-base address, or coordination with the recipient in advance. Ask before ordering rather than after.

Pet loss is widely under-acknowledged and frequently more isolating than other bereavements, because the mourner often feels they are not entitled to the grief.
