Thanksgiving Hostess Gifts: What to Send and When
The person hosting Thanksgiving has been cooking since Tuesday, is feeding somewhere between eight and twenty people, and will spend the day itself managing an oven schedule.
The person hosting Thanksgiving has been cooking since Tuesday, is feeding somewhere between eight and twenty people, and will spend the day itself managing an oven schedule. A hostess gift that requires anything from them — a vase, a trim, a decision about where to put it — is not a gift, it is a task delivered at the worst possible moment.
This is the practical companion to our guide to Thanksgiving flowers in Washington DC.
Send Tuesday, Not Thursday
The single most useful decision is the delivery date, and the answer is Tuesday, November 24.
Wednesday is the heaviest travel day of the American year and one of the worst delivery days on the calendar — couriers are saturated, and a Wednesday arrival into a DMV suburb is genuinely at risk. Thursday morning is worse, and by Thursday afternoon the host is not answering the door.
Tuesday also serves the host better. The arrangement is placed calmly, before the cooking peak, with time to move it if it does not sit right. Flowers arriving mid-preparation get set down in a kitchen and forgotten.
Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the worst delivery day in America. Send Tuesday and the problem disappears.
What to Send, by Budget
Around $35–$80. For a colleague, a neighbour, or a household you are not dining with. Cheers reads as a genuine small gesture, and Designer Flower Mix gives more presence.
Around $120–$180. The standard range for a table you are sitting at. Designer Art builds well into an autumn palette, and Welcome Home Arrangement is the warmer, more domestic option.
Around $180–$250. For the host of the main family gathering, or a household hosting for a large group. Logan Circle Blush Garden has the scale for it, and Georgetown Blush & Ivory is the more restrained choice for a formal table.
In a Vessel, Never Wrapped
This is the rule that separates a useful gift from a burden. A wrapped hand-tied bouquet requires the host to find a vase, cut stems, and arrange it — three tasks, at the exact moment they have no capacity.
An arrangement delivered in its own vessel requires them to set it down. That is the entire interaction. For Thanksgiving specifically, this matters more than for almost any other occasion.
Florist's tip: Ask for the gift arrangement to be built low, under about fourteen inches. There is a reasonable chance the host will put it straight on the table, and a tall gift arrangement then becomes the centerpiece problem — blocking sightlines across a table where people sit for three hours.
When Flowers Are Not the Right Answer
For a host who is already receiving flowers from three other guests — which happens more than people expect at Thanksgiving — a plant is the better differentiated gift. It outlasts the weekend, requires nothing during it, and is still there when the relatives have gone.
Orchid Presence — Soft is the strongest version of this. It needs no water management across a four-day weekend of guests, and it stays presentable into the new year.
Ordering
Thanksgiving week is the most constrained week of the American floral autumn — for material and, more acutely, for delivery capacity. Order by the Friday before at the latest.
If you send to the same households every year, putting a standing preference on file means the palette, scale and Tuesday delivery are set once rather than re-explained annually. For building the table itself rather than sending to it, see our centerpiece guide.
Common Questions
When should I send Thanksgiving flowers?
Tuesday, November 24 in 2026. Wednesday is the heaviest travel and delivery day of the American year, and by Thursday the host is not answering the door.
Should a hostess gift be a bouquet or an arrangement?
An arrangement in its own vessel. A wrapped bouquet requires the host to find a vase, trim stems and arrange it, which is three tasks at the moment they have least capacity.
How much should I spend on a Thanksgiving hostess gift?
Around $35 to $80 for a colleague or neighbour, $120 to $180 for a table you are dining at, and $180 to $250 for the host of the main family gathering.
What is a good alternative to flowers for a Thanksgiving host?
A plant or orchid. Hosts often receive flowers from several guests, and a plant outlasts the weekend, needs nothing during it, and is still presentable long after the arrangements have gone.
Tell us the household and we will land it Tuesday, in a vessel, low enough for the table.

Sending Flowers to Someone Staying in a Hotel
Flowers waiting in a hotel room is one of the better gestures available — it is genuinely surprising, it lands in a moment when the recipient is usually tired and slightly displaced, and it costs no more than sending to a house.
