The most common reason a bouquet dies early has nothing to do with the flowers — it's the invisible film of bacteria living on the inside of the vase you rinsed but never actually cleaned. That slick, barely-there coating is called a biofilm, and it forms within days of a vase holding water. Rinse it under the tap and you displace maybe a third of it. The rest stays, colonizes fresh water within hours, and begins plugging the xylem vessels of every stem you place in it. Peonies that should hold eight days collapse in four. Hydrangeas wilt with full water in the vessel. The flowers get blamed. The vase deserves it.

What's Actually Happening Inside a Dirty Vase

Cut flowers drink through xylem — narrow, straw-like conduits that run the length of the stem and carry water up to the petals by capillary action and transpirational pull. Those conduits are measured in micrometers. It takes remarkably little to block them: a cluster of bacterial cells, a fragment of leaf tissue, a bubble of air. Once a vessel is occluded, that section of the stem stops conducting, and the bloom above it begins to lose more water than it takes in. That's wilt. Not thirst in the way we think about it, but plumbing failure.

Bacteria in vase water reproduce exponentially. A vessel that looked clean on Monday can carry tens of millions of cells per milliliter by Thursday, particularly in a warm Logan Circle rowhouse or a south-facing Navy Yard apartment where afternoon light bakes the water. Those bacteria do two things simultaneously: they physically clog the cut end of the stem, and they release enzymes that break down stem tissue, widening the damage. Meanwhile the flower itself produces ethylene, and bacterial activity accelerates its release — which is why one dirty vase can shorten the life of everything in it, including varieties that are ordinarily quite tough.

Biofilm is the part most people miss. Free-floating bacteria are easy to flush. But bacteria that have attached to glass or glaze and secreted a protective polysaccharide matrix are physically anchored and chemically shielded. Water alone doesn't touch them. Soap and a soft-bristle brush do. This is the entire secret, and it costs about ninety seconds of your time.

The Cleaning Protocol, Step by Step

We clean every vessel in our studio between uses, and the process below is exactly what we use before a stem ever goes into a Logan Circle Blush Garden or any other design that leaves our workroom. Adapt it to your kitchen sink and it will do the same work.

  • Empty completely and immediately. Don't let old water sit. Pour it out, and if you're between arrangements, don't leave the vessel wet and capped — biofilm loves standing moisture.
  • Wash with hot water and dish soap. Surfactants lift the polysaccharide matrix that mechanical rinsing can't. Use a bottle brush for anything taller than your hand. For narrow-necked vessels, a length of clean cotton dishcloth pushed down with a chopstick works beautifully.
  • Scrub the shoulder and the neck, not just the base. The waterline is where biofilm concentrates most heavily — it's the interface between water, air, and glass, and it's the ring people skip.
  • Sanitize. One teaspoon of household bleach per quart of water, ten minutes of contact time. This is the step that separates a clean vase from a sterile one. Vinegar works on mineral scale but is a weak antimicrobial; don't substitute it here.
  • Rinse three times. Bleach residue is phytotoxic in concentration. Three full rinses eliminates it.
  • Air dry inverted on a rack. Never towel-dry the interior. Dish towels are among the more contaminated objects in any home.

For ceramic and stoneware, the protocol matters even more. Glazed surfaces develop microscopic crazing over time — a fine web of cracks in the glaze that harbors bacteria in a way smooth glass simply doesn't. Unglazed interiors should be treated as permanently porous and sanitized every single time.

Florist's tip: Fill a spent vase with warm water and two denture-cleaning tablets, then let it sit overnight. The effervescent action reaches the bottom of tall, narrow vessels — the tapered cylinders and bud vases no brush can navigate — and the sodium percarbonate is a genuine oxidizing sanitizer, not a placebo. Rinse thoroughly in the morning.

Mineral Scale, DC Water, and the Long Game

Washington's municipal water runs moderately hard, drawn from the Potomac and treated with chloramine rather than free chlorine. Two consequences follow. First, that cloudy white ring at the old waterline is calcium carbonate, and it isn't cosmetic — scale is porous and gives biofilm a textured surface to grip. Soap won't remove it. White vinegar at full strength, left to sit for an hour, will dissolve it; for stubborn deposits, add a tablespoon of coarse salt and swirl for gentle abrasion. Never use steel wool inside glass. The scratches you create become permanent bacterial harbors.

Second, chloramine is more stable than chlorine, which means DC tap water carries a mild residual antimicrobial effect — a small advantage, but not a substitute for a clean vessel. Let tap water sit uncovered for thirty minutes before use if you notice a chemical scent, and always use room-temperature water for most stems. Woody-stemmed material like lilac, hydrangea, and flowering quince prefers water at 100–110°F on arrival; the warmth lowers viscosity and moves through blocked vessels faster.

A vase is not a container. It is the flower's circulatory system for the last two weeks of its life, and it should be treated with the same seriousness you'd give a wine glass or a chef's knife.

Clear glass is the honest material here — you can see exactly what's happening. Cloudy water, a ring of scum, a stem end going brown: all visible, all actionable. Building the Habit Into Your Week

Recut stems every two to three days at a 45-degree angle under running water, and change the vase water at the same interval — but here's the part that matters: give the vessel a fast soap-and-brush wash at every water change, not just the final one. Thirty seconds. A quick scrub of the waterline and the base, a rinse, refill. This single habit routinely adds three to five days of vase life, which on a substantial arrangement is the difference between a week and nearly two.

Strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline before arranging. Submerged foliage decomposes rapidly and is the single largest bacterial load you can introduce.
