If your firm has an ESG position it has to defend, it is worth understanding which parts of a floral programme genuinely carry environmental weight and which parts are marketing. The honest summary: one issue dominates, one is counterintuitive, and most of the rest is noise.
If you change one thing, change this. Floral foam — the green block that holds stems in most commercial arrangements — is a phenolic plastic. It does not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe, it fragments into microplastics as it breaks down, and it is used once and discarded. A single large lobby installation can consume several blocks, and a weekly programme across a building disposes of foam continuously into general waste.
The alternatives are well established and entirely adequate: chicken-wire armatures, kenzan pin holders, reusable metal frogs, moss packing, and straightforward structural stem work where the flowers support each other. These require more skill and slightly more labour, which is the actual reason foam persists. Ask any prospective vendor directly whether they work foam-free, and treat a vague answer as a no.
Where an installation genuinely needs the longevity that cut material cannot give, preserved botanicals sidestep the disposal question entirely — a preserved dome is a single purchase that lasts years rather than a weekly waste stream.
The intuitive position is that local flowers must be lower-carbon than imported ones. For much of the year in a climate like Washington's, this is wrong, and the reason is heating.
Research comparing flowers grown in heated Northern European greenhouses against the same species grown in open fields in East Africa and air-freighted to Europe has repeatedly found the field-grown, air-freighted product to carry the lower carbon footprint — because the energy cost of heating and lighting a greenhouse through a northern winter exceeds the energy cost of the flight. The specific ratios vary by study, species, and season, and this is genuinely contested territory, but the direction of the finding is robust enough that "local" cannot be treated as a synonym for "low carbon."
What survives this is seasonality rather than locality. A flower grown outdoors in its natural season, wherever that is, carries a fraction of the energy burden of the same flower forced out of season under glass. The defensible sourcing position is therefore seasonal-first: buy what is genuinely in season somewhere it grows without heat, and be sceptical of any flower available identically in every month.

Two flowers to note as year-round exceptions worth their footprint: orchids, which are long-lived enough that per-week impact is low, and structural foliage, which lasts and often travels by sea. An orchid presence lasting six weeks compares favourably against six weekly cut arrangements on almost any measure.

For procurement purposes, ask for the certification name and the grower, not the adjective. A vendor who can name their farms is telling you something; a vendor whose sustainability page is entirely adjectives is telling you something too.
A weekly programme generates weekly organic waste, and in most commercial buildings it goes into general waste because no one specified otherwise. Spent flowers and foliage compost readily. If the building has an organics stream, ensure the floral contractor uses it and removes their own waste on the same visit rather than leaving it. If it does not, this is a small and unusually winnable argument to have with building management, because floral waste is clean, predictable, and entirely compostable.
Vessels are the other half. A programme where the florist collects, sterilises, and reuses vessels avoids a surprising volume of glass and ceramic disposal. Specify it in the contract; it rarely happens by default.
Foam-free work costs slightly more in labour and is broadly cost-neutral once the foam itself is deducted. Seasonal sourcing costs meaningfully less than fixed year-round specification, because you are buying material at its natural abundance rather than forcing it. Certified stems carry a modest premium. Reusable vessels save money over any horizon longer than a year.
The net for most corporate programmes is close to flat, and often slightly favourable — which makes the honest recommendation straightforward. Specify seasonally, insist on foam-free, ask who grew it, and skip the adjectives. That is most of the available benefit, and it is not an expensive position to hold.
