Why Foam Was Always a Design Problem, Not Just an Environmental One

Foam dictates angle. Every stem inserted into a brick sits exactly where you push it, at exactly the degree you choose, frozen. That sounds like control, and it is — but it's the wrong kind. Florist's tip: When building on chicken wire, use a 1-inch aperture mesh and crumple it to roughly three layers of depth — any looser and heavy hydrangea heads drift; any tighter and you can't get thick woody stems through without crushing the cambium. Secure with clear waterproof tape in a cross pattern, never a grid, so you retain diagonal insertion points.

What Foam-Free Looks Like on a DC Table

The visual signature is asymmetry that still reads as composed. Foam-free arrangements have negative space — actual air between clusters — and a discernible front, side, and back rather than a uniform sphere.
