Most failed flower deliveries are not florist errors.
Most failed flower deliveries are not florist errors. They are address and access problems, and they concentrate almost entirely in apartment buildings, secure offices, and gated communities. Nearly all of them are preventable with information the sender had and did not think to give.
A missing apartment number is the most common reason a delivery fails outright. A courier at a secure entrance with no unit number and no buzzer name has no way in and no one to ask.
Include the unit number in the address field itself, not in the delivery notes — notes are frequently not printed on the label the driver carries. If the building uses a buzzer directory under a different name from the recipient's, say so explicitly, because a driver looking for "Chen" on a panel listing "M. Okonkwo" will simply leave.
A staffed lobby is the best possible delivery target. The package is accepted, signed for, and held.
Two things to know. First, most doormen will not accept a delivery for a unit they cannot identify, so the unit number rule still applies. Second, and more importantly, flowers left in a lobby are out of water. A hand-tied bouquet accepted at ten in the morning and collected at seven that evening has spent nine hours dehydrating, often in a warm space, sometimes in direct sun through lobby glass.
For a doorman building, specify an arrangement in a water source — a vase or a hydrated container — rather than a wrapped bouquet. This one choice prevents most "the flowers arrived dead" complaints, and it is why arrangements in vessels are worth their premium for urban delivery.
The hardest case, and where most failures happen. The realistic options, in order of reliability:
What does not work: hoping the driver gets in behind another resident, or leaving flowers in an unsecured vestibule, where they are a theft risk and a weather risk.
Where flowers are left outside, temperature does the damage. Below freezing, flowers left on a porch for an hour are destroyed — and the damage does not show until they thaw. Above about 85°F in direct sun, an arrangement can be beyond saving in under an hour.
In either condition, do not authorise a doorstep leave. Reschedule, or redirect somewhere staffed. A same-day delivery in a January cold snap to an empty apartment is money spent on flowers nobody will ever see intact.
Corporate delivery has its own failure modes. Many Class A buildings in Washington require couriers to check in with security, some require deliveries through a loading dock rather than a lobby, and a few prohibit outside deliveries above the ground floor entirely.
Include the company name, the floor, and — where the building is large — the tenant's suite number. And avoid delivering after about three in the afternoon on a Friday, when the recipient may already have left and the flowers spend the weekend at a reception desk.
For corporate recipients specifically, a long-lived arrangement in a vessel is again the right specification. An orchid tolerates a day at a security desk in a way a hand-tied bouquet does not, and a client gift arrangement is built to survive the same journey.
Gate codes change, and guest lists need the courier's company name in advance. If the recipient lives behind a gate, either provide a current code or call ahead to add the delivery. A driver turned away at a gatehouse will not usually try twice on the same day.
The checklist that prevents nearly every failure:
Providing a phone number does risk spoiling a surprise, since a driver may call. If the surprise matters more than the certainty, say so explicitly and give an alternative contact instead. That is a trade worth making consciously rather than by omission.

Flowers travel far worse than people assume, and the damage is rarely the one anticipated.
Gerbera daisies fail in a recognisable way: the broad head begins to face the floor while the stem still looks green.
Freesia is purchased for fragrance as much as for colour.
