The answer, increasingly, is yes — but the process demands respect for both the chemistry and the biology involved. Resin preservation is not a craft store project. Done correctly, it's archival. Done carelessly, it produces cloudy, brown, bubbled disappointment. The difference lies almost entirely in preparation, timing, and the choice of resin system — and that's exactly what we're going to walk through here.

To preserve a flower successfully, you first need to understand why fresh flowers destroy most preservation attempts. Plant cells are approximately 80–95% water by mass. Epoxy resin systems cure through a chemical exothermic reaction — they generate heat as they harden. Introduce residual moisture into that environment and you get one of two outcomes: the water vaporizes and creates micro-bubbles trapped inside the cast, or it interferes with the polymer chain formation entirely, leaving the resin soft, sticky, and permanently clouded. Neither is recoverable.
Certain varieties are more forgiving than others based on their cell structure. Dense, low-moisture blooms — dried Limonium sinuatum (statice), Helichrysum bracteatum (strawflower), and fully dried Lavandula angustifolia — hold their form exceptionally well because their cellular moisture has already escaped before they ever touch resin. Delicate, high-water-content blooms like Hydrangea macrophylla, garden roses, and peonies require the most rigorous drying protocols before they're anywhere near ready. Seasonal timing also matters in ways people rarely consider. Arrangements that arrive in Washington DC during August humidity are absorbing atmospheric moisture even as they sit on your counter in Georgetown or Logan Circle. If you're planning to preserve a summer wedding bouquet or a significant anniversary piece, keeping the flowers in a climate-controlled environment — away from kitchen steam and outdoor air — from the moment they arrive isn't overcaution. It's chemistry.
There are four primary drying methods used before resin encapsulation, and they are not interchangeable. The method you choose should be determined by the flower variety, the timeline you have, and the level of color retention you're willing to accept as a tradeoff.
Not all epoxy systems are appropriate for botanical encapsulation. Avoid hardware-store casting resins marketed for general use — they typically have shorter pot times, generate more heat during cure, and yellow significantly within 12–18 months of UV exposure. For flowers, you want a UV-resistant, low-viscosity, slow-cure epoxy specifically formulated for deep casting. Systems with 24–72-hour cure windows generate less exothermic heat, which reduces the likelihood of blooms shifting or browning during the cure process.
Mixing ratio precision is non-negotiable. Most quality casting resins operate on a 1:1 or 2:1 resin-to-hardener ratio by volume or weight, and even a 5% deviation will leave the cured piece permanently tacky or structurally weak. Use a digital scale, not measuring cups. Mix slowly and deliberately for a full three minutes, scraping sides and bottom — unmixed streaks don't disappear during cure, they become visible lines in the finished piece.
The pour itself should happen in stages. For a deep cast enclosing a full three-dimensional bloom, pour a base layer first and allow it to cure to a gel stage — typically 12–24 hours depending on ambient temperature. Position your dried flower on the gel layer, then pour your encapsulating layers gradually, waiting for each to reach gel stage before adding the next. This staged approach prevents the flower from floating, controls bubble formation, and lets you orient the bloom exactly as you intend. A Dupont Circle apartment in January at 65°F will cure slower than a Navy Yard loft in July — temperature directly affects working time and final clarity.

Once fully cured — allow a minimum of 72 hours before demolding, and ideally a full week before any sanding or polishing — your encapsulated piece will likely have a slightly hazy surface from the mold. Wet-sanding through progressive grits (400, 800, 1500, 2000) followed by a plastic polish compound brings the surface to optical clarity. It's the same process used on automotive headlight restoration, and it works. Take your time on this stage. Rushing it with coarse grits and skipping intermediate steps leaves micro-scratches that scatter light and kill the clarity you spent weeks building toward.
Display conditions matter as much as the preservation process itself. UV exposure is the primary enemy of long-term color retention in resin-encased botanicals. Even UV-stabilized epoxy formulations have limits. Place preserved pieces away from south-facing windows and direct afternoon sun — the kind that floods Georgetown rowhouses and Capitol Hill parlors in spring and summer. A north-facing shelf, a display cabinet with UV-filtering glass, or strategic placement in a shaded interior keeps colors vibrant for years rather than months.
The varieties that preserve most beautifully in resin — and the ones we most often recommend clients consider saving — are garden roses in their tight second-day stage of opening, Ranunculus asiaticus in any color, single-stem Protea cynaroides for a dramatic architectural statement, and dried Pampas grass fronds for textural contrast in panel-style pours.
