Pet loss is widely under-acknowledged and frequently more isolating than other bereavements, because the mourner often feels they are not entitled to the grief. Almost nobody sends anything. That is exactly why doing so lands so hard — and there is one specific hazard to avoid, which is more important than anything else in this article.
A household that has just lost one pet very often still has others. True lilies cause acute kidney failure in cats, and the entire plant is toxic — pollen, petals, and the vase water. Sending lilies to a grieving cat owner risks a second emergency in the same week.
The same caution applies to tulips and hyacinths, chrysanthemums, and eucalyptus foliage, all of which cause real if less severe problems. Baby's breath is mildly toxic and is in a startling number of standard bouquets.
Safe and appropriate: roses, orchids, snapdragons, stock, freesia, sunflowers, gerbera, celosia, and most alstroemeria. Where you want certainty rather than a judgement call, a purpose-built option such as our pet-friendly, cat-safe arrangement removes the question entirely — and sending a visibly pet-safe arrangement is itself a small signal that you thought about it.
Three things make pet loss distinctively difficult, and understanding them shapes what to write.
Disenfranchised grief. The mourner often receives the message, explicitly or not, that this does not count. Colleagues do not offer bereavement leave. People say "it was just a dog." The result is grief carried privately, which is heavier.
The euthanasia decision. Most pet deaths involve the owner choosing the moment. That is a burden no other bereavement carries in the same way, and it commonly leaves guilt — whether it was too early, too late, whether more could have been done. This is usually the part that hurts most and the part nobody addresses.
Routine collapse. Pets structure a day — the morning walk, the evening feed, the animal at the door. That structure disappears at once, and the absence is felt dozens of times a day for weeks.
The rules are simple and the errors are consistent.
Keep the scale modest. A large formal tribute can feel disproportionate in a way that embarrasses the recipient — this is a private grief and an enormous arrangement makes it a public one.
Good options: a small, warm arrangement in colours the person likes rather than funeral white; a living plant, which continues; or a memorial tree or seed packet to plant, which is particularly well received where the animal is buried in the garden.
Something in the register of a garden sympathy basket works well — it reads as considered and personal rather than institutional. For a longer-lasting marker, a preserved arrangement can sit beside a photograph or a collar for years, which many people want and few think to ask for.
Send when you hear. But the more valuable gesture is the second one, two or three weeks later, when the initial sympathy has evaporated and the house is still quiet at the times it used to be busy. A short message then — again using the animal's name — reaches someone at the point where almost nobody else is still checking.
For colleagues, one practical note: many people take a day or two off after a pet dies and feel obliged to disguise why. A manager or team acknowledging the actual reason, plainly and without irony, is worth more than the flowers.

A growing share of the services held in Washington are not funerals.
A b'nai mitzvah is two events with different rules — a synagogue service and a celebration — usually on the same day, usually a Saturday, and the floral requirements of the two barely overlap.
The most useful thing to know about funeral flowers is that in several major traditions they are not sent at all, and sending them is a visible error at the worst possible moment.
