How to Transport Flowers in a Car

More flowers are ruined between the shop and the house than at any other point in their life, and the car is where it happens. A forty-minute drive in the wrong conditions costs more vase life than the following week of care can recover — one reason to consider having them delivered instead.

The Boot Is the Worst Place

It is where everyone puts them and it is wrong on three counts.

A closed boot in summer reaches temperatures well above the cabin — frequently over 50°C on a hot day — and heat is the single fastest way to destroy cut flowers. In winter the same space drops below freezing, and frost damage to petals is instant and irreversible, showing as translucent patches that turn brown within hours.

A boot also has nothing to secure against. Flowers slide, tip, and arrive crushed against the wheel arch.

The footwell behind a front seat is the best place in most cars: cool, shaded, enclosed on three sides, and low enough that nothing tips far.

Air Conditioning and Heating Both Cause Damage

A vent blowing directly onto an arrangement desiccates it remarkably quickly — cabin air from an air conditioning system is very dry, and the airflow strips moisture from the petals faster than a cut stem can replace it.

Heating in winter is worse, because it combines heat and dryness. A twenty-minute drive with the heater on full, aimed at the passenger footwell where the flowers are sitting, will visibly age them.

Aim the vents away, or turn them off for the journey and open a window instead.

Direct Sun Through Glass

Car glass concentrates solar gain considerably, and flowers on a back seat in sunlight are effectively in a greenhouse.

Keep them shaded — the footwell again, or covered with a light cloth if they must be on a seat. Never on the parcel shelf or the dashboard, which are the two hottest surfaces in the vehicle.

Securing Them

A vase of water in a moving car is a spill waiting to happen, and water on upholstery is a considerably more expensive problem than the flowers.

For an arrangement in a vessel: put it in a box, wedge the box with something soft, and fill the vessel no more than a third. Most florists will do this on request and many do it automatically.

For a wrapped bouquet: lay it flat rather than standing it upright, with the heads supported and nothing on top of them. A bouquet standing in a footwell will fall over at the first corner and the heads will take the impact.

A cardboard box, a plastic crate, or a laundry basket all work. A non-slip mat underneath is worth more than it sounds.

Time Out of Water

For a short journey — under half an hour, in reasonable conditions — flowers are fine out of water and no special measure is needed.

Beyond an hour, and particularly in warmth, it matters. The options are a bucket with a few inches of water wedged so it cannot tip, water tubes on individual stems for anything delicate, or a damp cloth wrapped around the cut ends and secured with a bag.

Whatever the journey, re-cut every stem and get them into water as soon as you arrive. The stems will have begun sealing during the drive, and the first thing to do at home is undo that.

Walking, and Public Transport

The same principles apply and one extra risk arrives: compression. A bouquet on a crowded train or held against a body on a walk gets crushed against things, and crushing damage does not recover.

Carry it away from the body, heads up, with the wrapping doing structural work rather than just looking presentable. Ask for a bouquet to be wrapped for travel rather than for presentation if you have a journey — most florists will build in more support if they know.

Cold is the other consideration in winter. A ten-minute walk below freezing is enough to damage exposed petals, and the wrapping should cover the heads rather than leaving them showing.

The Long Journey

For anything over two hours — driving flowers to a wedding venue, taking arrangements to a house in another state — the approach changes.

Transport them cold if possible: a cool box with ice packs, kept separate from the flowers by a layer of cardboard so nothing is in direct contact with a freezing surface. Load at the last possible moment. Avoid stopping anywhere the car will sit in the sun.

And carry a bucket, water, and secateurs. Being able to re-cut and rehydrate at the destination makes more difference than anything done in advance.

For anything genuinely important arriving at a distance, delivery is the better answer — our arrangements travel in vessels designed for it, and something like our Housewarming Arrangement Deluxe is built to arrive as a finished object rather than to survive a car. Where the journey is unavoidable and long, preserved work in the register of our Preserved Flower Dome removes the problem entirely.
