The pink-or-blue default is both aesthetically limiting and, increasingly, factually wrong — plenty of parents do not know the sex, plenty know and have not shared it, and plenty simply do not want their party colour-coded. This is a guide to specifying baby shower florals that work regardless, and that do not look like a compromise.
Pink-and-blue is easy to brief and easy to buy, which is most of its appeal. It fails in three specific ways. It forces a disclosure some parents have not made. It dates the photographs to a convention that is shifting quickly. And it is visually weak — saturated pastel pink against saturated pastel blue is a low-contrast combination that photographs poorly indoors.
The alternatives below are not neutral in the sense of being bland. They are neutral in the sense of not encoding a claim about the baby.
The most reliable. Reads as fresh and considered in any room, photographs cleanly under mixed lighting, and needs no explanation. Depth comes from texture and value rather than hue — a mix of paper-white and warm cream with structural foliage. An all-white arrangement is the straightforward version of this.
Warm yellows are the most underused option in this category. Yellow is cheerful without being childish, sits beautifully against wood and neutral interiors, and is genuinely gender-unassigned in a way that is still legible as celebratory. Gold and cream works in the same register at a slightly more formal pitch.
Rather than avoiding pink and blue, include everything — peach, lavender, butter, mint, blush and pale blue together. Using the whole range removes the coding entirely, and it is more visually interesting than any two-colour scheme. A pastel rainbow arrangement is exactly this idea.
For a less traditional event. Warm earth tones with dried grasses and seed heads photograph exceptionally well and suit a daytime, informal shower. They also last, which matters if the arrangement is meant to go home with someone.
The quietest option and the most forgiving in a busy room. Works particularly well when the food and cake are the visual focus and the flowers are meant to frame rather than compete.
Scent, seriously. Pregnancy commonly heightens smell sensitivity and can turn a pleasant fragrance into nausea. This is the single most important specification on a baby shower and it is almost never mentioned. Specify unscented — no lilies, no hyacinth, no tuberose, no heavily fragrant garden roses. Roses bred for vase life, orchids, ranunculus, and tulips are all safe on this count.
Sightlines at the table. A shower is a conversation event. Anything on a shared table needs to sit below about fourteen inches or guests spend the afternoon talking around it.
Guests bring children. Which makes the toxicity question live — no lilies, and ideally nothing on the toxic list within reach of a toddler. Low, heavy vessels also survive being knocked.
Someone has to carry it home. Arrangements that are gifts as well as decoration should be in vessels that travel. Tall glass on a car seat does not.
The best-value specification for a shower is florals that continue into the nursery or the home rather than being cleared with the paper plates. A few smaller arrangements distributed around the room outperform one large centrepiece on this measure — they are easier to give away at the end, and they suit a room where people move between seating and food.
A gift-oriented piece such as a new baby welcome kit serves double duty here, working as part of the styling and then going home with the parents. Preserved or dried elements extend that further, since they survive the newborn months when nobody is buying flowers.
Florists get asked to build the reveal into the flowers — a hidden colour, a cut-open bloom. It is worth being aware that the practice has become genuinely contested, including publicly by the person credited with starting it. Plenty of guests now find it uncomfortable, and plenty of parents book one because it is expected rather than because they want it. If a client is ambivalent, the full-spectrum pastel option gives them the celebration without the reveal, and nobody at the party will experience it as something missing.

The most useful thing to know about funeral flowers is that in several major traditions they are not sent at all, and sending them is a visible error at the worst possible moment.
Workplace milestone flowers go wrong in a narrow and predictable way: the arrangement is specified for the occasion rather than for the person, and ends up saying something slightly off — too romantic, too funereal, too large to carry, or too generic to mean anything.
Most sympathy content stops at the funeral.
