Flowers for Teachers: What Schools Actually Want You to Send

A DMV teacher told us she once ended a Teacher Appreciation Week with nineteen bouquets on her desk, no way to get them home, and a genuine sense of guilt about which ones she left behind. Everyone who sent one had done something kind. Collectively they had created a problem.

Flower gifting to schools is one of those areas where individual good intentions and collective outcomes diverge sharply, and where a small amount of coordination changes the result entirely.

The Coordination Problem

Thirty families acting independently will each send a modest bouquet. The teacher receives thirty modest bouquets, can carry perhaps three, and the rest are distributed around the school or quietly discarded. Nobody intended that, and every family paid for it.

Thirty families pooling produces one arrangement of real quality, costs each family less, and the teacher takes it home. This is why so many schools have shifted to class gifts, and why room parents increasingly organise it in advance.

Thirty families acting independently produces thirty bouquets a teacher cannot carry. The same money pooled produces one they will remember.

If you are the person organising the class gift, that is a real commission — one arrangement, presented on behalf of thirty households. Logan Circle Blush Garden is the piece we build most often for that role, and Georgetown Blush & Ivory when the school prefers something more restrained.

What Schools Actually Have Policies About

More schools than people realise have written guidance on gifts, and it is worth thirty seconds to check:

• Fragrance and allergies — some schools ask for low-fragrance or no flowers in classrooms with severe allergy cases
• Value caps — many public school systems cap the value of gifts to staff, sometimes at a surprisingly low figure
• Equity policies — some schools discourage individual gifts entirely so that no child is visibly unable to participate
• Latex — balloons often accompany flower gifts and are restricted in many schools

The value cap is the one that catches people out. A generous individual gift can put a teacher in the awkward position of having to decline or declare it. A pooled class gift usually sits outside those rules because it comes from the group rather than a family.

Build for the Journey Home

Everything about a school-bound arrangement should be designed around the fact that it ends the day on public transport.

Wrapped, not vased. A hand-tied bouquet with a firm collar can be carried under one arm. A vase arrangement needs two hands, weighs several pounds, and sloshes.

Under eighteen inches. Anything taller is unwieldy in a corridor, on a bus, and in a car already full of marking.

Wrapped base, not just stems. A proper collar keeps the bouquet intact when it is set down on a desk, picked up, set down again, and carried.

Low fragrance, no pollen. Six hours in an enclosed classroom with thirty children. Lily anthers removed as standard.

When to Send Something Other Than Cut Flowers

For a school office, a department, or a teacher you want to acknowledge over a longer period, a plant beats a bouquet comfortably. It needs no vase, survives a half-term break, and does not have to be carried home on the day it arrives.

An orchid is the strongest version of this — Orchid Presence — Soft for a personal gesture, Orchid Presence — Classic for a shared staff space. Both stay presentable for months rather than days, which for a working environment is worth more than peak beauty for a week.

The Card Matters More Than the Flowers

Every teacher we have spoken to says the same thing: the note is what they keep. Bouquets are lovely and temporary. A specific sentence about what a teacher did for a particular child is what ends up in a drawer and gets re-read years later.

"Thank you for everything" is forgettable. "Thank you for noticing that he was struggling with reading before we did" is not. If you are going to spend money on flowers, spend two minutes on the card — it is the part that outlasts them.

Common Questions

Tell us the school and whether it is from one family or the class. We will build it to travel, and keep the fragrance down.
