Calla Lilies: Buying, Styling and Care

Calla lilies are neither true lilies nor as simple as their clean silhouette suggests. Their rolled spathe bruises, their stems release sap, and their elegant line can collapse when the cut end is crushed or the vase is overfilled. Used with care, they are among the clearest flowers available: one curve, one opening and almost no visual noise.

Calla Is a Common Name

Florist callas belong to Zantedeschia. Large white forms and smaller coloured hybrids differ in stem thickness, bloom scale and cold tolerance. They should not be confused with true Lilium, although both still require sensible handling around pets and children.

Ask which type is being supplied. A photograph of a tall white calla does not describe a bouquet made from miniature plum hybrids.

The Shape Should Be Intact

Inspect the rolled edge for tears and translucent bruising. The spathe should feel resilient, the throat clean and the stem firm where it meets the flower. Softness at that joint is a warning.

Callas do not hide handling damage behind layers. A small crease becomes a dark line and remains part of every photograph.

Colour Deepens in the Throat

White, cream, yellow, orange, coral, pink, red, purple and near-black varieties exist, usually with shading rather than flat colour. Dark callas can read almost black under low light and warmer purple in daylight.

Approve them in the event lighting when colour is critical. A screen image cannot show how the waxy surface reflects the room.

Cut With a Sharp Blade

The fleshy stem can split or mash under dull scissors. Make one clean cut and support the stem while handling. If it begins to curl at the base, recut above the damaged area rather than pinning the split together.

The sap may irritate sensitive skin, so wash hands and tools. Keep the cut end and plant residue away from food preparation.

Use Less Water Than a Rose Vase

Calla stems can become soft when kept in very deep water. A clean modest depth, refreshed frequently, supports hydration while limiting submerged tissue. Follow the florist’s instructions for the particular variety.

The vessel must still be stable. A shallow water line inside a top-heavy vase is safe only when the base cannot tip.

Straight and Curved Are Both Natural

Some stems are upright; others develop a deliberate curve. Designers can work with that line in a crescent, cascade or arm bouquet. Forcing every stem straight removes the quality that makes the flower useful.

Store and transport upright if straightness matters. Like other responsive stems, callas can alter direction when laid flat or exposed to one-sided light.

Minimal Arrangements Expose Every Decision

Three callas in a clear vessel can look more resolved than thirty mixed stems, but water, cuts and spacing are all visible. Clean glass and unequal, purposeful heights matter.

Bouquets Need a Dry Handle

In wedding work, calla sap and water should not reach ribbon, clothing or hands. The florist must finish the handle, blot the stems and provide a vase tall enough to support the bouquet between photographs.

Long arm bouquets need a carrying demonstration. Their apparent simplicity can become awkward when the person must also manage a train, door and greeting.

Keep Them Out of Cold and Heat

Coloured hybrids in particular may show cold injury, while sun and hot cars soften the stem quickly. Protect the flowers during winter door-to-van transfers and pre-cool the car in summer.

Do not place the vase on a radiator or directly under an air-conditioning vent. Stable moderate conditions extend the clean line.

They Are Not Table Garnish

All parts should be treated as ornamental and irritating if eaten. Do not insert raw stems into cakes or let the flowers contact food. Use a food-safe barrier when a cake designer includes them decoratively.

Keep the botanical name with the design in homes with animals. The fact that calla is not a true lily does not make it something a pet should chew.

The Calla Lily Purchase Check

Before approving callas, ask the florist to show the expected head size, stem length and degree of curve for the variety being supplied. Mini callas and large standard callas create different silhouettes, and a photograph without scale can hide that difference. Look for firm, uncreased spathes and resilient stems rather than demanding every flower stand ruler-straight; the natural line is much of their value.

At home, prepare a tall clean vessel before unwrapping, use only a modest depth of properly mixed solution and keep the arrangement away from fruit and direct heat. Recut with a clean blade when needed, handle the soft stems without crushing them and remove any stem that becomes translucent. A spare narrow vase makes it easy to preserve the last sound callas as the original composition becomes smaller.
